Support for patients using weight loss tools in the UK

Weight loss tools are increasingly being prescribed in the UK for individuals living with obesity or weight-related health conditions. When used appropriately and under medical supervision, they can support appetite regulation and weight reduction.

We provide structured nutrition and lifestyle support for individuals who have been prescribed weight management pharma and non pharma tools by their GP or specialist. Our role is to help women make the most of their weight loss journey while supporting optimal health, reducing negative side effects, considering female hormones and improving strength in the long-term.

How weight loss tools work and what is available in the UK

Several prescription medications are licensed in the UK for weight management; may belong to a group called receptor agonists. These medicines mimic hormones involved in appetite regulation and blood sugar control. They can:

  • Increase feelings of fullness

  • Reduce appetite

  • Slow gastric emptying

  • Support improved blood glucose regulation

All of these medicines are prescription-only and should only be used following medical assessment and ongoing clinical supervision.

Current clinical evidence indicates advantages and disadvantages of pharma tool use in eligible patients

Clinical trials have demonstrated that these tools can support clinically meaningful weight loss when used alongside diet and physical activity in eligible patients [Ref1].

Potential advantages may include:

  • Appetite regulation

  • Structured support for energy intake reduction

  • Improvements in certain metabolic markers

Considerations include:

  • Gastrointestinal side effects

  • Requirement for ongoing medical supervision

  • Cost in private settings

  • The possibility of weight regain if lifestyle changes are not established

Side effects and safety considerations

Are weight loss injections safe

Receptor agonists and related medications are regulated and have undergone extensive clinical testing. However, like all prescription medicines, they carry potential side effects.

Common side effects:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

  • Abdominal discomfort

These symptoms are often more noticeable when starting treatment or increasing dose and may reduce over time.

Less common but more serious risks:

  • Pancreatitis

  • Gallbladder issues, including gallstones

  • Severe gastrointestinal symptoms

  • Dehydration

  • Rare vision-related concerns in certain populations

Patients should report persistent or severe symptoms to their prescriber promptly.

'Oz*mpic face'

The term 'oz face' is a media phrase used to describe facial volume loss seen in some individuals following significant weight reduction. This change is generally associated with rapid fat loss rather than a direct drug effect. In many cases, changes are partially or fully reversible once weight stabilises and nutritional intake improves.

Hair loss from weight loss

Similarly, temporary hair shedding has been reported by some patients during rapid weight loss. Hair loss in this context is typically related to:

  • Sudden calorie restriction

  • Inadequate protein intake

  • Micronutrient insufficiency

  • Physiological stress

Preventing hair loss & unwanted skin-related side effects during weight loss

When weight loss medication is combined with appropriate nutrition and lifestyle strategies, the risk of unwanted changes to skin, hair and lean tissue can be reduced.

Key protective factors include:

  • Adequate protein intake to support collagen, skin structure and muscle mass

  • Micronutrient sufficiency, including nutrients involved in skin health such as zinc, iron, vitamin A, vitamin C and B vitamins

  • Resistance training, which supports lean mass and improves overall tissue quality

  • Gradual, structured weight loss, rather than aggressive calorie restriction

  • Hydration and sleep, both influence skin repair and appearance

Are these drugs for life?

Obesity is recognised as a chronic, relapsing condition. For some individuals, longer-term pharmacological support may be appropriate under medical supervision. For others, tools may be used during a structured weight loss phase while sustainable lifestyle changes are established.

If medication is stopped without behavioural and nutritional strategies in place, data shows that weight regain is common [Ref2]. This reinforces the importance of comprehensive support.

Why combining weight loss tools with nutrition and lifestyle support matters

Clinical guidance consistently states that weight management tools are intended to be used alongside:

  • A reduced-calorie diet

  • Increased physical activity

  • Behavioural change support

Tools may reduce appetite, but they do not automatically:

  • Preserve muscle mass

  • Optimise nutrient intake

  • Establish sustainable eating patterns

  • Improve strength and physical resilience

  • Build long-term behavioural consistency

Without structured nutrition and resistance training, a proportion of weight lost may come from lean tissue rather than body fat.

A combined approach that includes:

  • Evidence-based nutrition planning

  • Adequate protein intake

  • Strength training to preserve muscle mass

  • Gradual progression of physical activity

  • Habit formation and behavioural coaching

is associated with better body composition outcomes and improved long-term weight maintenance compared to medication alone.

I was just under 13 stone and very unhappy/unhealthy. I was exhausted all the time and was overwhelmed by the thought of trying to lose weight on my own. So much was going on in my life as a carrer for my elderly mum and my 3 autistic children and I felt extremely stressed all the time.

Natalie, my nutritionist and health coach, was very understanding and supportive. She gave me all the time in the world, helped me deal with the initial sickness as I started the course, and gave me great advice on how to feed myself effectively to lose weight and stay healthy on the course and how to be active.

I'm managing to keep my weight stable by following Natalie's advice and I've got my life back. I feel and look 10 years younger, I have energy, I'm enjoying exercising and my self-confidence has soared.
